How to Make Faraa? Try Faraa - A Steamed Treat from Chhattisgarh!

Hungry for a Unique Bite? Have You Tasted Faraa, Chhattisgarh’s Steamed Delicacy?

Calling all snack lovers! We're taking a delicious trip to Chhattisgarh, a beautiful state in India, to explore their famous dish - Faraa! This crispy, savory snack is made with simple ingredients and is perfect for satisfying your afternoon cravings.

What you'll need:

  • For the Faraa:
    • 1 cup cooked rice
    • 1.5 cups rice flour
    • Salt to taste
    • 1 tablespoon ghee

  • For the Tadka:
    • 8-10 curry leaves
    • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
    • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
    • 1-2 tablespoons oil

  • For the Chutney (dip):
    • 3-4 tomatoes
    • 2 green chilies
    • 1 onion (optional)
    • 5-6 garlic cloves
    • 1 lemon
    • Salt to taste

Let's get cooking!

  1. Mixing it Up:
In a large bowl, combine the cooked rice, rice flour, salt, and ghee. Use your hands to mix everything well.
  2. Dough Time: Gradually add water, a little at a time, and knead the mixture into a smooth and soft dough. Be careful not to add too much water, or the dough will become sticky.
  3. Shaping the Faraa:
Lightly grease your palms with some ghee. Take a small portion of dough and roll it between your palms to form a finger-shaped log, similar to a thick chip but not too thin. Repeat this process with the remaining dough.
  4. Let's Steam!:
Fill a steamer with water and bring it to a boil. Grease the steamer plate and carefully place the Faraa pieces inside. Steam them for 10-12 minutes, or until cooked through.
  5. The Flavorful Tadka:
Heat oil in a pan. Add the mustard seeds and cumin seeds, and let them crackle. Pop in the curry leaves and let them sizzle for a few seconds.
  6. Time to Assemble!:
Add the steamed Faraa to the pan with the tadka and saute for 2 minutes. This adds a beautiful golden brown color and extra flavor to your Faraa.
  7. Chutney Time (Optional):
In a blender or grinder, combine all the chutney ingredients except the lemon. Blend it into a thick and chunky chutney. Add a squeeze of lemon juice for a refreshing touch.
  8. Serve and Enjoy!
Plate your delicious Faraa and generously drizzle it with the chutney. Now, sit back, relax, and savor this delightful taste of Chhattisgarh!
